IBM - Regional Software Solutions Centre (2003) IBM extended its level of operation on the University of Ballarat Technology Park in 2003 by establishing the IBM Regional Software Solutions Centre (RSSC). A key initiative of the Centre is the “Earn As You Learn” program linked to the Bachelor of Information Technology (Professional Practice) with the University of Ballarat. The program sees students gain valuable hands-on experience by performing software support to IBM clients. University of Ballarat Vice-Chancellor Professor Kerry Cox said “our partnership with IBM is of immense benefit to our students and staff as they learn and work at the leading edge of IT”. The RSSC, with 70+ staff today, also enables IBM to offer clients a world class, lower cost, regional centre that provides a wide range of innovative Application Management Services (AMS) offerings.
In late 2004 Optus awarded IBM a three-year services contract that specifically centred around software development and maintenance being shifted from its Sydney offices to RSSC Ballarat, where the cost of doing business is significantly lower. Today Optus is one of a number of clients that leverage the low cost advantage of the IBM Regional Software Solutions Centre in Ballarat.
